Ashanti fabric is one of the most popular and renowned clothing in Ghana. It is a kente type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth stripes. It cannot be separated from the history of the Ashanti nation, it has its origin with the Ashanti people and its empire, it is considered  a royal sacred cloth only in times of extreme importance. The use of it has become widespread over time but its importance has remained and the fabric is still held in high esteem.

Ashanti is originally seen as a fabric used for special occasions as it is very colourful and its various colours has meaning grey is seen as healing, pink as the female essence of life, white as purification, yellow as preciousness to name a few. Every design has a story with special and proverbial meaning and it has varying designs, different colours and pattern.

Nowadays, the fabric have evolved in production and materials used yet its symbolism remains, though kente were used to make clothes for royalty, it is now used to make cloths for all sorts of people.
