Rumours that the Academy will forbid any female guests from attending this year’s Oscars ceremony, should they not be wearing a bow of a size requiring them to walk sideways, are yet to be confirmed. But it’s looking likely. Current estimates suggest that, come Sunday evening, giant bows will be the single biggest majority embellishment on the west coast of America.

Don’t say you haven’t noticed the trend – because it is literally impossible not to clock. You could call it a micro-trend, but that would be a lie. The new red-carpet bows are nothing if not macro. They require their own invitation, their own stylist.
