Vitiligo Can’t Stop Their Dreams! Models Winnie Harlow & Sahad Salman’s Inspiring Story in Vogue Arabia
“Before I didn’t feel good with myself and I didn’t like the way I looked. Winnie gave me the confidence to fight.” Those were the exact words of Mecca based rising model, Sahad Salman as she covers Vogue Arabia alongside Canadian supermodel, Winnie Harlow, in its June issue themed, “Stronger together”.
Winnie Harlow who is living with Vitiligo (a skin disease caused by lack of melanin) has proven that every condition is not for one’s disadvantage, rather it should be utilized to one’s advantage. She is the first and only Canadian to be admitted on America’s Next Top Model. Though she did not win the competition, she has gone ahead to excel in her career as a model and a public spokesperson.
On this edition, Ms Harlow and Ms Salman who are both living with Vitiligo share their touching stories of success, notably pointing out how the condition of living with Vitiligo hasn’t stopped them from achieving their dreams. The theme sends a positive message to readers about the importance of representation.
As stated by Vogue, the cover shoot was the first time Harlow and Salman have met. Yet despite living thousands of miles apart, they knew each other via social media. The social media site was also where the talent scouts at Vogue Arabia spotted Salman, who had little experience in fashion prior to this cover story.
According to Salman, understanding the impact of the shoot on the lives of women who look to the media for positive representation, spurred her interest in the shoot. She noted that she never expected to meet Winne, but sharing time on the set of Vogue with her was a dream. “I feel that now I, too, can inspire other girls from Arab world”, She added.
